Retail Sector Meeting Update
On 20 January 2025, we convened a Retail Sector meeting to address the challenges posed by the ban on imported meat from South Africa due to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Retailers, along with representatives from the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Eswatini (HOTEAS), engaged in spirited discussion on the impact of this ban on product availability and proposed solutions to ensure safe importation.
Key resolutions include:
– A commitment to maintaining Eswatini’s FMD-free status.
– A proposal for a risk-based approach to import meat from approved sources in South Africa.
– Strengthening border controls to prevent the influx of unregulated processed meat products.
– Collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture to establish import protocols that safeguard public health and food security.
Business Eswatini will engage with the Department of Veterinary Services to develop a comprehensive agreement on safe importation practices. Stakeholders emphasized their readiness to work with government authorities to address these pressing issues.
BE will continue to hold a series of sector meetings and thereby encourages members to come in their numbers as this year is a defining year for the business community. The Secretariat is highly energized and ready to serve the membership.
